Artist Statement: This tee is a piece of art to me. The comb in the background is inspired by ancient traditional African combs. These combs were an important item for ancient communities, used to comb and style their hair. For many ancient communities, hair was sacred, and the time spent caring for it was important — creative styles were an extension of who you were. As colonialism swept through Africa, it restricted not only language, people, and education, but also how people dressed and styled their hair. This tee shirt is a symbol of liberty: you can be you, and wear your hair the way you want to.
